Cheese Sold at Costco Tainted with E. coli
I don’t know about you, but when I think high-quality gourmet cheese, Costco immediately comes to mind. Not only does it taste great, but you can use the other 999 blocks that came in the case to build a nice shed in your backyard.
But your shed-building will have to wait. Federal health officials are warning consumers to avoid a cheese sold in Costco stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada, due to an outbreak of E. coli.
Bravo Farms Dutch Style Raw Milk Gouda Cheese sold at Costco and available for in-store tasting between October 5th and 11th has sickened 25 people in five states, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
No deaths have been reported due to the outbreak. E. coli can cause bloody diarrhea, kidney failure, and even death.
If you bought some of this devil cheese – don’t eat it! Instead, Costco is offering refunds. Then take your money, go to McDonald’s, and get diarrhea the old fashioned way.
We’ve got serious problems with food safety in the United States. Taco Bell, one of our most beloved fast food sanctuaries, was fingered as ground zero for a multi-state salmonella outbreak in August. Now that’s outside the bun!
And earlier in the summer, a California-based company recalled 1 million pounds of frozen beef patties – yes, a MILLION – due to E. coli contamination.
It’s amazing. When I first started blogging the spinach-E. coli crisis was the big news. I figured it was a fluke. Problems with food safety in the U.S.? No way, It’ll never happen again. Wow, was I naïve. Fail.
