Top 3 Organic Wines of 2012
Last year, we told you all about 2011’s sustainable wine trends. 2012’s sustainable wine has advanced even further. Now that we’ve stepped into 2013, it’s time to look back the best of what 2012 had to offer wine lovers… and sustainable wine is only the beginning. Here are three of the very best organic wines that came out last year. It’s time to stock the wine cellar!
Stellar Organics (White)
Stellar Organics come from Stellar Winery, South Africa’s largest producer of organic wines. This year’s star may be the 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc, which has already won a bronze in the the International Wine and Spirits Competition. This wine is light in color with fig and tropical fruit on the nose and lemongrass and limey tones. It’s a lovely, refreshing wine, perfect to have on-hand for summer grilling. While you cannot order this wine shipped to the States directly from the vintner, details are available as to where this wine can be purchased near you.
La Bodega del Pinoso (Red)
In the Western part of Alicante, La Bodega del Pinoso has been making wine since 1932. Today, they also produce organic wines, including the Vergel Red, a young, fresh wine from this year with a vibrant, red color. It’s a blend of Alicante Bouschet, Merlot and Monastrell grapes, which is very different from other wines from the same area. It is perfect for drinking straight away, with a fruity flavor making it easy to drink with most meals, as well as on its own.
Rosnay Organic (Red)
This red hails from New South Wales and the organic farmers at Rosnay who, since 1997, have been a part of a unique cooperative farming project to produce organic wines. This red — the Freedom Preservative Free Red — has already won the 2012 Winewise Small Vigneron Bronze Medal. It is made of Mourvèdre grapes, which have a rustic flavor. Mourdèvre was chosen for this preservative-free wine; it is often used as a component in rosés at the same vineyard. This wine is ready to drink right away, with gentle oak and bright fruit flavors.
