100 Percent of Kraft Heinz Packaging Will Be Recyclable, Reusable, or Compostable By 2025

The Kraft Heinz Company announced today that it will move toward a 2025 deadline to make all of its packaging globally recyclable, reusable or compostable. It says it will also work toward increasing the recycled content in its packaging and decreasing the overall volume of packaging used.

“Our collective industry has a massive challenge ahead of us with respect to packaging recyclability, end-of-life recovery and single-use plastics,” Bernardo Hees, CEO at Kraft Heinz, said in a statement. “Even though we don’t yet have all the answers, we owe it to current and future generations who call this planet ‘home’ to find better packaging solutions and actively progress efforts to improve recycling rates. That’s why Kraft Heinz is placing heightened focus on this important environmental issue.”

The move is part of the company’s effort to achieve greater packaging sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative is part of its Growing a Better World strategy announced last year.

The multinational food company says it will “aggressively pursue” both technical alternatives to current packaging while also collaborating with packaging experts, organizations, and environmental coalitions.

Kraft Heinz says it recently exceeded its goal of reducing packaging weight by 50,000 metric tonnes. And it has a 2022 deadline for making its recyclable Heinz Tomato Ketchup PET plastic bottle fully circular by using recycled materials to make the packaging.

The company is also working toward a low-carbon economy through its alignment with the Science Based Targets Initiative and setting aggressive targets for its supply chain to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“We found that most of our emissions are coming from areas outside our direct operations,” Hees said. “To truly succeed as champions of sustainability, we will look at our full value chain and determine where we can make the greatest impact for our planet.”
