The aromas in a DIY version of potpourri are that much more natural, subtle, and full of winter cheer. Try your hand at this recipe for potpourri, and the feel free to get creative after you’ve developed a base.

The idea of homemade potpourri is enticing, but it often conjures images of foraging through the forest, looking for the cleanest, most aromatic pine needles, pine cones, berries and other natural winter wonders. Whether you are time strapped, uninterested in wandering the backyard woods or living in the city, this recipe makes it easy to make potpourri.

Homemade Potpourri

Makes about 3 cups

Ingredients

  • Large handful of whole cloves
  • 8-10 cinnamon sticks
  • 8-10 star anise
  • 2 oranges
  • 2 apples
  • 1 teaspoon allspice powder

Instructions

First, you will have to dehydrate the fruit. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Slice the oranges and apples into very thin pieces, and lay them out on a cookie sheet so that each piece has its own place. Bake for 1.5 hours and then open the oven so that it is slightly ajar, but still mostly closed. This will allow the moisture to escape. Continue to cook, checking every 20-30 minutes, until the fruit has dried. Remove from the oven and let cool. Toss in a bowl with the remainder of the ingredients so that the allspice is evenly distributed. Transfer to a presentation bowl and set throughout the house.
