Good news for vegetarians: When your friends want to hit up a fast food joint for a burger, Wendy’s may soon have your back. The nation’s third largest fast food chain is currently testing a black bean veggie burger on its menu.
“We’ve been conducting a small operations test for a high-quality, great-tasting black-bean burger at two restaurant locations in Columbus,” Wendy’s spokesman Bob Bertini said in an e-mail to The Columbus Dispatch.
The new veggie burger is listed under the build your own sandwich menu and comes with a lengthy list of accoutrements including pepper jack cheese, asiago ranch sauce, tomato, red onion, and spring mix greens—and according to Columbus Underground, the veggie burger is delish:
“Anyway, what’s not to like? It’s a bean burger. It’s pleasant and savory; and overall not as heavy as a beef burger, even with the ranch. Outside the mixed greens matted with dressing, I’m not sure it’s all that healthy, but it’s certainly cruelty-free, and that counts for something in the food world.”
While Wendy’s hasn’t said the veggie burger is here to stay, its future looks promising: Jackass stuntman Steve-O started a petition on Change.org begging the mega-chain to add a veggie burger to its menu. Today, the petition has nearly 33,000 signatures. (Though it appears Wendy’s had already started the process before the petition.)
“It makes sense because Wendy’s is moving upscale,” Darren Tristano, vice president at Technomic said to The Columbus Dispatch. “It’s a good thing to give it a try and see if they can score with vegetarians.”
More and more fast food chains seem to be getting the hint: Burger King already has a veggie burger on its menu and White Castle recently added one as well—and hopefully more plant-based options are just around the corner.
