Animal Planet Schedules Vegan Show ‘Sweet Avenger’

Discovery Network’s Animal Planet Channel has announced plans to feature Danielle Konya, the chef and founder of Vegan Treats bakery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania who will be starring in her own show on the network this fall called “Sweet Avenger.” The program will follow both Konya’s personal and professional life as a vegan, business owner, chef, activist, and single mom.

From her out-of-the-way spot in Eastern Pennsylvania, Konya’s vegan baking skills have become a favorite among the who’s-who of veg-celebs including Joan Jett, Daryl Hannah and Alicia Silverstone. Konya is a committed animal rights activist, and this show will not be a how-to or a competitive pastry bake-off, but rather, it will be built around how Konya balances her passion for educating consumers about the ways in which their diets directly affect the lives of billions of animals as well as the environment, and her everyday life as a single mom of an adopted daughter.

Konya told the Hollywood Reporter, “I want to show people that by eating a vegan confection, you’re directly saving the lives of cows, chickens and thereby the environment and habitats of thousands of other exotic species.” She said, “There’s nothing appetizing about the suffering of 10 billion animals a year, and my treats can satisfy both the palate and the conscience.”

The vegan diet has been growing in popularity quite a lot in 2011. It has had its share of media attention this year too with Oprah, Martha Stewart and Ellen giving it primo airtime. Oprah and her staff even went vegan for a week, bringing focus to the treatment of animals raised for food, the impact on the environment and the healthy effects on the human body.
