Finally, A Mobile Phone App to Help Us with Recycling
Ever find yourself confused and/or frustrated by what exactly you can recycle? The growing number of bins and constantly updated list of what’s accepted by recycling plants is, to say the least, daunting, if not downright terrifying. Well, you may soon find it’s one less thing you have to worry about, and you’ll have Nestlé to thank for it. That’s right, Nestlé, as inCrunch. In June, Nestlé launched the first free mobile phone app dedicated to helping consumers with their recycling. Not only does it tell you what bin items should go where, but it can also help identify items you may not have even known were recyclable. Dig it.
The world’s largest food company has created the app, Recycle123, to be compatible with both Nestlé brand products and non-Nestlé products and is working to promote it to all relevant government and non-government agencies, as well as opening the database to other manufacturers to upload product specific information. Recylce123 is designed to provide users with clear, easy-to-understand instructions about what and where to recycle items. The app will tell users which color bins in their area correspond to the items searched in the app, and when used specifically with Nestlé brand products, the app will give users a step-by-step breakdown of how tosort and recycle every part of the product packaging.
Recycle123, available foriPhone and Android, was developed in Singapore in a partnership with the Nanyang Polytechnic School of Information Technology, and is currently available only in Singapore. But, seeing as the world’s largest food manufacturer makes the app, plans to expand to other parts of the world, including the U.S., are undoubtedly already in the works.
