Beyoncé is adopting a plant-based diet – for the next 44 days, at least. Last weekend, the superstar posted an image of avocado toast on her Instagram with the caption, “44 days until Coachella!! Vegan Time!!”
The diet is ostensibly Beyoncé’s way of getting as fit as possible before she headlines the Coachella festival in April. Studies have shown that a whole foods plant-based diet can contribute to weight loss, and J.D. Roth of “The Biggest Loser” and “Extreme Weight Loss” fame swears by it on his newest program, “The Big Fat Truth.”
If Beyoncé is choosing a plant-based diet instead of calorie cutting or keto, it may be because this isn't her first rodeo: In 2013, she and husband Jay-Z became partners in 22 Days Nutrition, a vegan meal delivery service founded by their trainer, Marco Borges and inspired by his book, “The 22-Day Revolution,” which recommends eating vegan and avoiding alcohol for 22 days straight to help users “transform” their lives and their bodies. Both of the superstars tried out the vegan diet soon after partnering with Borges for what Jay-Z called “a spiritual and physical cleanse,” PETA reports.
Neither of the stars have stuck with a vegan diet full-time, with Beyoncé explaining in a 2015 video that she still ate meat on occasion.

“It’s all about balance,” she said in the video. “But absolutely I make better choices.”
But even the temporary foray into plant-based eating has certainly been inspirational. Immediately after Queen Bey’s post about her 44-day commitment, her 112 million followers whipped themselves into a frenzy of plant-based passion, sharing their own plans to follow suit.
Even a temporary plant-based diet can contribute to a smaller carbon footprint and may help consumers reap the health benefits of this way of life, which recent studies have shown are plentiful: a November study showed that eating a diet rich in plants – even while continuing to eat fish – reduced people’s chance of heart failure by 42 percent, and a study published in February showed that a plant-based diet could prevent overweight adults from developing diabetes.
Beyoncé isn’t the only role model for a vegan diet: stars including Alicia Silverstone, Woody Harrelson, Miley Cyrus, and Jennifer Lopez have also ditched meat and animal products to help improve their health and the planet.
