5 Tips for Throwing a Fabulous Brunch


Most of us breeze through breakfast on our way out the door to work. Why not slow it down a bit by throwing a classy weekend brunch? It doesn't have to be a special occasion - maybe just a Sunday! Take the time to enjoy your favorite brunch treats in the company of your friends with the following ideas that will keep it simple. When it’s all over, you’ll still have the rest of the day ahead of you.

1. Plan make-ahead recipes. Unlike a typical party, brunches often take place just a few hours after you get up. That leaves you with less time to prepare than you are normally used to. Save yourself stress by finding dishes that you can make the night before. Some ideas include quiche, breakfast casserole, and fruit salad.

2. Measure the ingredients. Of course, not everything you want to make is able to be prepared ahead of time. For some dishes, you’ll want to make them just as your guests are arriving, so they’re warm, fresh, and yummy. You can even make them on the spot for people. Customize pancakes or waffles with different fresh fruits or cinnamon. For scrambled eggs or omelets, you can offer different items to mix in, like bacon, ham, spinach, and various cheeses.

3. Set the table ahead of time. That way, you can take your time and really set the scene. Consider using warm colors to help keep things bright and wake people up! A fresh bouquet of sunflowers or daffodils makes a wonderful, simple centerpiece.

4. Turn on your bread machine the night before. There’s nothing nicer than waking up to the smell of baking bread, and your guests will be salivating the moment they get in the door. Simple breads like whole wheat are delicious and go well with egg dishes, but you can also try something sweet, like cinnamon bread.

5. Make mimosas. Trust me, they’ll be a huge hit, and they’re so easy to make: half orange juice and half champagne. You can garnish them with a cherry or a slice of strawberry. Want to take it up a notch? Make fresh-squeezed OJ or try a different kind of juice, such as passion fruit. For a non-alcoholic version, add a natural carbonated beverage instead of champagne.

Here’s one brunch recipe to get you started!

Bacon, Cheese, and Mushroom Quiche

1 unbaked pie crust
1 ½ cups of half and half
8 slices of Swiss cheese
4 eggs
Salt and pepper (to taste)
6 bacon slices (cooked)
½ cup sliced mushrooms

  • Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. 
  • Slowly add the mixture to the pie crust. 
  • Bake in the over at 350 degrees for 50 minutes to 1 hour.
