5 Talc-Free Body Powders that Soften Without the Toxins

A Guide to Talc-Free Body Powder: What You Need to Know

Could your body powder harm you?

Mineral makeup abounds but body powders have come under fire over potential heath risks. Find out why it is important to use talc-free body powder in light of the Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder cancer scare.

Baby powder sounds harmless enough, right? We use it on our most precious beings, after all. It has to be safe enough for adults.

But talcum powder has come under extremely close scrutiny in the past several months. Johnson & Johnson was ordered earlier this year to pay $72 million in damages to the family of an Alabama woman who lost her life to ovarian cancer, thought to be caused by the company’s Baby Powder. A staple product of practically everyone’s youth.

It has been suggested that talcum powder, when applied to the genitals, may enter the fallopian tubes and become imbedded in the ovaries. While some experts believe this is not linked to ovarian cancer, there is enough evidence to prompt even more suits to come forward against the body care giant.

This news may be reason enough for many women to ditch their powder, but it is not the first go ‘round talc has had with concern over safety. Back in the 1970s concerns arose over asbestos contamination in talc, and the government began mandating testing and certification to ensure all cosmetic grade talc is asbestos-free.

Does it make you feel better knowing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved cosmetic grade talc as safe? With cancer scares and a common practice of under regulation of cosmetics by the FDA, this may not be good enough for savvy consumers of today. Case in point: many organic beauty shops don’t even carry body powders.

Ok, scary stuff aside, some women love a good body powder. Are there any safe powder ingredients?

Many brands committed to safety in cosmetics go a different route with body powder ingredients. Arrowroot powder, rice powder, baking soda, and clays are absorbent and softening, and often used in powders.

Cornstarch is used by some talc-free body powder manufacturers but it is important to note than corn is often a genetically modified crop and an ingredient that many wish to avoid. Certified organic cornstarch is best when using a product that contains the ingredients, because organic regulations prohibit GMOs.
