There are several harsh ingredients often found in shaving cream: propylene glycol is a humectant that is also found in antifreeze and brake fluid; triethanolamine, an emulsifying agent that keeps oil keeps oil and water from separating but can cause skin irritation and has been linked to cancer; sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, which despite making for a great lather, may mess with estrogen levels and can be carcinogenic; mineral oil, which can lock moisture on the skin but can also block pores and is actually a byproduct of petroleum. Shaving cream can also be filled with preservatives, fragrances, and colorants.

Men’s Face Shaving Cream
Makes a soap bar size
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
- 3 tablespoons cocoa butter, melted
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup liquid castille soap
- A few drops of vitamin E (preservative)
- A few drops of your favorite essential oil (scent)
Directions
Whisk all ingredients together for a few minutes. Pour into a glass jar or container to cool, making sure to shake it whenever it appears to separate. Store and use regularly.
