Without the prerogative to don layers of make up to beautify even the most lackluster of appearances, men are essentially left with a clean shave and a smile in order to make their best impression. There are several harsh ingredients often found in shaving cream: propylene glycol is a humectant that is also found in antifreeze and brake fluid; triethanolamine, an emulsifying agent that keeps oil keeps oil and water from separating but can cause skin irritation and has been linked to cancer; sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, which despite making for a great lather, may mess with estrogen levels and can be carcinogenic; mineral oil, which can lock moisture on the skin but can also block pores and is actually a byproduct of petroleum. Shaving cream can also be filled with preservatives, fragrances, and colorants.
