Get a Haircut, Plant a Tree? October 15th is Sustainable Beauty Day
If you’re looking for a great excuse to pamper yourself—look no further. And mark your calendars for Monday, October 15th, the second annual event known as Sustainable Beauty Day.
A partnership between Davines hair salons and The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, Sustainable Beauty Day helps to bring thousands of fruit trees to impoverished communities in developing countries. The program is made possible through making the world—and you—more beautiful with hair cuts and styling services available at all participating U.S. and Canadian Davines locations for just a $15 donation (but feel free to donate more).
It’s a treat to get pampered while doing good—but it’s also kind of important…The more beautiful we feel, the more we want to make the world beautiful, too. Davines knows this, and it drives the company’s commitment to using only ethically sourced ingredients and sustainable packaging, as well as making education on these decisions a large part of their marketing and promotional tools. And Sustainable Beauty Day’s success certainly speaks to that commitment. In its first year, the program raised $25,000, which helped plant more than 6,000 fruit trees in African countries Mozambique and South Africa. “FTPF is honored to partner with such an eco-friendly, socially responsible company as Davines on Sustainable Beauty Day–which allows one to become even more beautiful and support global fruit tree planting efforts at the same time, all within the comforts of a salon chair. What could be better?” asks Cem Akin, FTPF’s executive director.
Davines and The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation are aiming to double that number this year, and plant twice as many fruit trees for struggling communities in Brazil beginning in early 2013. Orchards will be planted at schools, community centers, health clinics, and on the properties of low-income households in partnership with the local NGO, Grupo Ecologico Olho D’Agua.
Fruit trees not only provide an ongoing source of healthy food for humans and farm animals, but they also provide ample shade, and offer a valuable educational tool as well.
