It’s clear that air fryers aren’t just a passing fad. These mighty appliances have earned a permanent spot in many kitchens, mine included. I’m a trained chef, food writer, and recipe developer, and I rely on my air fryer for everything from morning toast to whole roasts.

The best air fryer brands should score well across the board.

I only tested PFAS-free air fryers in an effort to avoid the forever chemicals that can leach into food and collect in your body. When it comes to capacity, the right air fryer will fit meals to feed your household without dominating your kitchen counter space. Versatility includes both the number and variety of cooking modes beyond air frying to achieve perfectly crisp sweet potato fries, such as dehydrating, steaming, dough proofing, and baking. 

A great air fryer should be easy to keep clean by handwashing or dishwashing and shouldn’t stain easily. And finally, when evaluating performance, I considered how quickly and evenly each air fryer cooked simple foods like toast and frozen French fries.

During testing, the Wonder Oven got a little too hot too fast in air fry mode a few times, and my fries came out overly charred in spots — you need to rotate the pan and toss the fries more frequently in this oven than others. That said, it’s an unbeatable tool for reheating something like cooked chicken, and that puts it up there with the best air fryers. The meat comes out moist and warmed through, not dry or overly crispy.

The Crispi Pro comes with two cooking and storage containers. The larger 6-quart container can accommodate a 4-pound whole chicken (though it’s snug), and the 2.5-quart is the perfect size for a meal for one. Ninja also makes a 4-quart container, sold separately. This more minimalist air fryer has fewer cooking functions than others, but it’s much smaller and easier to store. It heats incredibly fast and evenly, taking fries from frozen to golden brown in minutes. And you can keep an eye on things the whole time, thanks to the glass containers (which are also dishwasher-safe and help you avoid microplastics). 

I love the peace of mind I get from cooking directly in glass with no additional nonstick surfaces — and it’s a huge bonus that I don’t have to sacrifice easy cleanability or effectiveness in the process. This is a small but powerful machine without the bells and whistles of other air fryers, but it’s the one that I prefer to keep on my counter for its small footprint and quick results.

The Cosori Iconic has six cooking functions: air fry, roast, bake, dehydrate, proof, and reheat. While other models have more cooking modes, I don’t think this is a noteworthy limitation. This air fryer does everything the 10-function Ninja does, just in a different shape. In other words, you don’t need a “pizza” function to heat a crispy pizza. 

If you want to get techy with your dinner, the machine syncs with the VeSync app to enable easy control of the temperature and cooking mode from afar. The app is also loaded with tested recipes for you to enjoy. 

The quiet differentiator in this air fryer is actually its motor. This machine uses a DC (direct current) motor that regulates the fan speed and airflow more precisely than other air fryers, which typically use AC (alternating current) motors. Essentially, the fan in the Cosori Iconic model is more flexible and precise than the simple on/off switch you’ll find in other similar-looking products, so the temperature and air speed are constantly adjusted as your food cooks.

While a basket-style air fryer can’t necessarily cook multiple meal components simultaneously like an oven-style air fryer, the large capacity makes up for that in different ways depending on your priorities. If you’re feeding a crowd or like to meal prep, this appliance has you covered. 

The Typhur air fryer also has a unique feature you won’t find on any of the others I tested: a wireless thermometer that monitors food temperature as it cooks. When you insert the probe into a chicken or steak, for example, the appliance automatically adjusts its temperature and eventually shuts off as the chicken’s internal temperature rises. It even allows time for the chicken to rest for optimal juiciness. Note that this feature works great for large proteins, but the thick probe may be too large for delicate seafood.  

That said, I love how the thermometer turns the air fryer into a hands-off cooking tool. Some of the best air fryers may have more versatility, but I love that this product means I can pop in dinner and know it will come out nicely cooked without any babysitting. You can use the connected Typhur app (which makes use of some pretty cool AI) to choose your meat and desired level of doneness, or simply dial it in on the touchscreen panel.
