Spring Cleaning: 3 Ingredient Homemade Furniture Polish

In my spring cleaning routine, polishing my furniture into a shine is the finishing touch after giving the whole house a scrub down. It reminds me of layering on a piece of jewelry after carefully choosing the perfect dinner outfit—while not completely necessary, it adds a little something extra

For years I’ve mixed together my own cleaning products using natural ingredients. Conventional cleaning products contain dangerous chemicals that I don’t want infecting my home. For some reason though, I never thought to make my own furniture polish. Usually I just use my standard vinegar and water all-purpose cleaner to dust and wipe down furniture. Well, not anymore. This easy homemade furniture polish transforms dull furniture into well-polished pieces.

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • Water
  • Lemon juice

Directions:

1. Blend 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon water and a squeeze or two of lemon juice in a small bowl.

2. Place a small amount of the mixture on a soft cloth.

3. Wipe the polish onto a piece of furniture and give it a good buff.

The olive oil leaves furniture with a glossy shine, while the fresh scent of the lemon juice (which so many conventional cleaners try to replicate) lingers in the air. The fake scents in conventional cleaners just can’t compete with the real stuff.

Make the mixture as you go, so as to create less waste. You don’t want to leave this mixture sitting around because it will probably go bad before you use it again.

I tried this recipe on both my metal and wood furniture. It shined both beautifully. I would recommend using small dabs of it; a little seemed to go a long way. This mixture must have been pretty tasty too because my dog started to undo my hard work and lick it off the furniture as I went!
