On a recent trip to Cuba, I fell in love with this pastry and as soon as I got home, I knew I had to make an easy churros recipe. Fresh from the fryer, Cuban churros are slightly sweet and crunchy on the outside, with a pillow of soft dough in between. In what seemed like a few seconds our first batch disappeared, so yeah, I guess you could say they’re winners!

Are Churros Vegan?

In a word: sometimes.

The food on this island nation is meat heavy and if you stick to a plant-based diet, it’s hard to get by. The embargo has left Cuba without the best in fresh ingredients.

Produce is especially difficult to find with the exception of tropical fruits like papaya and pineapple, which are grown on farms throughout the island. On a number of occasions, I couldn’t find anything to eat and instead snacked on a MacroBar that I had brought from home.

Luckily, when it comes to churros, most of the recipes that I’ve seen, don’t include any animal products. This makes them a viable plant-based option in Cuba or in your own kitchen. Just look to avoid butter and eggs when looking for a recipe (or if you’re grabbing them from a food cart, it’s best to ask).

I may not have a food cart, but I do have an affinity for fried dough. Add some extra pizzazz by drizzling your fresh churros with melted vegan chocolate.

These would be an incredible finish to a plant-based meal of our sweet potato taquitos and a side of lard-free refried beans. While you’re at it maybe some homemade corn tortillas made into chips and dipped into this vegan layered bean dip and this unexpectedly bright trifecta guacamole. Can’t go wrong with a blood orange margarita or Michelada either. I mean…
