Just Add Kale: The White House Thanksgiving Menu

The Obama administration’s Thanksgiving dinner recipes are now available on the Obama Foodorama website and feature some healthy seasonal upgrades, including none other than the leafy green vegetable of the decade: kale.

While the usual Thanksgiving dinner suspects are fully represented, White House executive chefs are also serving up a simple kale salad, which may include kale grown in Michelle Obama’s Kitchen Garden, reports Obama Foodorama, “The White House Thanksgiving recipes are ucomplicated [sic], and the First Family’s celebration tends to be equally unfussy.”

Since 2009, the Obamas’ chefs have been sharing their Thanksgiving dinner recipes via the blog for all those who want to create a presidential meal for their own families.

This year’s menu was created by executive White House chef Cris Comeford, and features both a turkey and ham, two types of stuffing, macaroni and cheese, sweet and mashed white potatoes, a green bean casserole, dinner rolls and, of course, the kale salad. Desserts come by way of executive pastry chef Bill Yosses: “The grand finish to the holiday meal is six different kinds of pie, the President’s favorite dessert,” reports Foodorama, “Pumpkin Pie, Sweet Potato Pie, Huckleberry Pie, Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, and Banana Cream Pie” have all been on the White House Thanksgiving menu each year since 2009.

You can check out the full menu and recipes over at the Obama Foodorama blog.
