Homemade Mediterranean Spice Blend

Mediterranean style seasoning is perhaps one of the most easily available spice blends on grocery store shelves. And sure, it’s easy to go and buy spice mixes at your local supermarket, but making them yourself not only gives you a greater hand in the food preparation process, but it also reveals to you the unique individual flavors that are behind some of the most common spice combinations. The following Mediterranean seasoning combines the iconic flavors of Italy and Mediterranean countries including Turkey and Greece. If you close your eyes, it’s almost like you’re there.

This Mediterranean spice blend recipe is as apt for meat, poultry, fish, as it is for your favorite vegetable dishs. I like to take eggplants, zucchini and bell peppers, chop them up and drizzle them with olive oil. Then, I generously season them with the Mediterranean spice blend mix and cook the fragrant veggies until they’ve softened and browned slightly. I also apply this spice to fish and chicken marinades and let the meat soak in olive oil and the spice mixture overnight. This method really allows the meat or fish to absorb the seasoning’s strong (but not overbearing) flavors, ultimately leading to a more tasty dish. Serve with a side of the seasoned veggies, and the result is fragrant, earthy dish, reminiscent of a summer’s night dining somewhere just off the Mediterranean coast.
