Turmeric is a bright orange root member of the ginger family. It has been used in Asian and Middle Eastern cultures for centuries. Not only does the root flavor food, it also has numerous health benefits, especially when our bodies are in the midst of fighting infections.
You can often find fresh turmeric in the produce section of your local supermarket. It’s sometimes available at farmers markets. Sub out for a high quality organic powdered turmeric if fresh is not available.
1. Ginger and Turmeric Honey Bomb
This recipe from Green Kitchen Stories is wonderful, because you can make a big batch of the “bomb” to store in your fridge, and use it every time you want a warming drink or cup of tea. Remember to not mix it into water or tea if super hot, because raw turmeric is most effective and the heat can diminish its benefits. You could even enjoy a teaspoon or two of this mixed with some melted coconut or grapeseed oil as a salad dressing.
This tonic from The Delicious Revolution is full of flavor and nutrients that will give your immune and digestive systems a boost. Again, using fresh turmeric root is best, but powdered will work as well, and remember to use organic coconut water if you don’t have access to fresh coconuts. You could even make this recipe without coconut water, and turn it into a turmeric shot – just be aware that the flavor will be very strong!
3. Golden Milk (Turmeric Tea) Elixir
This is the perfect recipe for when you just need a comforting and satisfying cup of creamy tea. You can use either fresh or powdered turmeric for this recipe, just make sure to either juice it or grate it very fine if you are using fresh turmeric. You can also use whichever type of milk you prefer, and we highly recommend adding the coconut oil, as it helps your body digest the turmeric more quickly.
The Balanced Berry came up with this unusual, but definitely delicious smoothie recipe with turmeric. Have it for breakfast or use it as a pick me up snack in the afternoon to keep you going strong throughout the day. And don’t be afraid to add more than the 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric that the recipes suggests, and remember that fresh turmeric will definitely be more effective!
