5 Signs You Really Need to Make Time for Yourself

hands in the grass, heart hands

Many of us tend to have multiple responsibilities, to-do lists, phone reminders, and countless emails to respond to that can often leave us feeling drained and scattered. These feelings can sometimes become overwhelming and cause us to react in an unharmonious manner that can create collateral damage to our relationships and self awareness. Use these five signs to notice when you need to make time for yourself, so that you can prevent unwanted interactions and outcomes.

1. Wandering Mind

Instead of engaging fully in the conversations you are having and the activities you are engaging in, you mind wanders to all the things that you need to accomplish. In order to avoid this, give yourself the time to create your to-do list, and then give yourself and hour to focus on nothing but yourself in the form of meditation, taking a walk, or simply enjoying off time with a friend or family member.

2. You Feel Overwhelmed

This is a pretty obvious sign, and one that can easily come about when you have many irons in the fire. Instead of freaking out about the almost impossible number of things you feel you have to do, give yourself the time to prioritize and figure out which ones are most important to accomplish first. Usually the most important is taking some time to relax so that you have the energy to do everything you need to.

3. Your Energy Levels Begin to Dip

When you come home exhausted, and wake up exhausted, its a tell-tale sign that you are not giving yourself enough time. Give yourself some time to do something that you love and stimulates you. A Harvard psychology professor found that found people were happiest when making love, exercising, or engaging in conversation — perhaps one of these activities will boost your energy levels.

4. Forgetfulness

Are you starting to forget certain things, even if not that impactful, that you would never normally forget? This can be a sign that your mind is far too occupied, and you need to give yourself the time to reset so that you can re-organize your priorities. Chances are that when you take some time off from all the things you think you have to do, you’ll gain the space to remember all the ones that are truly important.

5. Irritability Toward Loved Ones

When we feel like we just can’t get everything done, or we feel like all the responsibility is resting on our shoulders, we can lash out at those we love the most, because we know that they will likely still continue to love us. To avoid this though, it is important to realize that no one is responsible for your feelings, and you must focus on your own needs in order to be as clear, concise, and respectful of everyone around you as possible. If you feel a negative reaction toward someone else coming on, pause, try to remove yourself from the situation, and take even just five minutes to reflect on your feelings, and how you can express them in a way that is understandable and respectful.
