5 Ways to Reduce Stress and Stop Being a Worry Wart
A few years back I noticed something really disconcerting about myself. I stressed in a cycle, about the same things over and over again. And it can be debilitating, making it impossible for you to move forward in life. We all usually have tools and ways to reduce stress once it gets out of control, whether it’s yoga, meditation, exercise, a good hot bath. But the most important aspect is catching yourself in action, realizing what you’re doing before a funnel of negative energy consumes you. If you’re a worry wart here are some things you should stop stressing over.
Are You a Worry Wart? 5 Ways to Reduce Stress Over Common Triggers
1. Cheating on your diet.
Eating healthy about 80-90 percent of the time is a good rule to follow but at the same time, occasionally veering off the path actually makes you more likely to be consistent. The word “diet” has a negative connotation while healthy eating habits seem less intimidating and therefore more reachable. Don’t stress about treats because they’re important to staying the course.
2. I’m not where I’m supposed to be in life.
The key to unhappiness is comparing yourself to those around you. Just know that there will always be richer, thinner, prettier, more accomplished people around you if that’s what you’re looking for in life. And the fact of the matter is you don’t know their story anyway. You’ll never know how someone else really feels inside. Live your life according to meeting your own goals and no one else’s. Stop stressing about what society wants for you.
3. The world around you.
I think it’s important to know what’s going on in your world but don’t be a worry wart about it. I try and listen to the news for at least a few minutes everyday. But constantly getting consumed by the sometimes ruthless news cycle can be too much to bear. When I was living at an ashram, the swamis would say that becoming too consumed by negativity in the world only leads you to produce negative energy, which is then sent out to the world around you. Using negative feelings as a motivation to get involved is one thing, but knowledge for the sake of stress is entirely different.
4. Getting the next best thing.
Have you ever noticed that when you feel down in the dumps you start grumbling about the material things that you don’t have? My cloths aren’t designer, my car is a hunk of junk, I still can’t afford a home. Does this sound familiar? When you start stressing about the next material object that you need to fill a void, look to the root of what’s causing the pain. It’s likely not the need for a new ride.
5. Being perfect.
Life is too short for perfection. Do the best you can. Decide your goals in life and take steps each day to meet them. But in the end, a perfect home, tiny waistline, and 2.5 kids won’t necessarily make you happy. Perfection isn’t perfect after all, it only causes a slew of stress.
