A Clean Shave, The DIY Way
As the folks over at WIRED said, “Thick, rich, velvety – and chock-full of ingenious chemicals.” That’s conventional shaving cream for ya. We don’t have to tell you that the triethanolamine and stearic acid that thicken into a rich lather, the polyvinyl pyrrolidone and isopentane that make hairs stand up straight for a cleaner shave and plethora of other ingredients used in the manufacturing of this seemingly necessary (although definitely useful) product are anything but natural in their makeup.
While we’ve been known to simply turn to the all-purpose beauty panacea Dr. Bronner’s instead, a true shaving cream experience can be luxurious, not to mention highly effective. In that case, whip up your own homemade shaving cream and leave the creepy chemicals to the masses.
DIY Shaving Cream
What you’ll need:
1/2 teaspoon of sunflower oil
1/4 cup of unscented glycerin soap (make sure it’s plant-derived and natural)
Double boiler
A cup or mug for the cream
What to do:
In your double boiler, melt chunks of the glycerin soap.
Stir in the sunflower oil.
Move the mixture into a mug as soon as all of the glycerin chunks are melted.
This formula will set quickly. When you need to shave, simply work water against the soap until a lather builds and use it the same way you would regular shaving cream.
