Drake has invested in MatchaBar, a Brooklyn-based café and retailer that sells beverages featuring the powdered green tea popular in Japan. The Grammy award-winning Canadian rapper is helping out with the September launch of the verdant bottles in Whole Foods. The drink will premiere with four flavors: Apple Ginger, Hint of Honey, Mint, and Original Matcha.

Why does Drake care so matcha ‘bout this wellness-oriented brand, you ask? (We’re curious, too, since he isn’t exactly a beacon for healthy living.) He hasn’t publicly said, but perhaps he’s impressed by the astounding health benefits of this special ceremonial tea. Matcha, unlike the cuppa you’re accustomed to, doesn’t come served in the form of leaves steeped in water—matcha is stone-ground into a delicate powder from leaves of shade-grown tree (which increases their concentration of chlorophyll). Due to this unique process, matcha is a powerhouse of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber that’s known to help detox, balance pH, boost metabolism, and boost energy and concentration.

According to MatchaBar, there are three main qualities of matcha that make it superior to other caffeinated beverages (the company says its matcha’s effects are “Better Energy”).

  1. Caffeine: Matcha gives you about 25 milligrams of caffeine, which is roughly one-third of what you get a cup of Joe. Although matcha contains less caffeine, the magic lies in how the caffeine is processed by the body. “The caffeine in matcha bonds to larger plant molecules, increasing the time it takes for the caffeine to break down in the bloodstream,” per MatchaBar’s website. This means you get slow and steady energy, versus a major high followed by a crash.
  2. Antioxidants: As one of the richest sources of antioxidants to exist, matcha helps protect your body from free radicals, which are highly unstable molecules that experts believe cause disease, inflammation, and accelerated aging.
  3. L-theanine: L-Theanine is an amino acid known to help you stay as cool as a cucumber and uplift your mood.

This matcha-given “Better Energy” is why MatchaBar founders Max and Graham Fortgang started the company in the first place. As former caffeine and coffee addicts, they sought a better way to keep their vigor and vivacity high without the crashes. When they first discovered matcha, they were blown away.

Perhaps Drake was blown away as well. According to his song, “Energy” he “got a lot of people tryna drain [him] of this energy,” so what better way to recover than a bottle of matcha?
