Kourtney Kardashian Calls This Veggie the ‘Easiest Detox Ever’
Kourtney Kardashian is undoubtedly a Kardashian. But she’s also the healthiest member of her mega-famous polarizing TV family. She’s been seen on “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” getting oil-based colonics to clean out her bowels, she raves about using manuka honey to cure virtually everything, and she always seems to be noshing on fresh organic foods or sipping tea amidst all the prime-time drama and quirky conversations with Khloe.
Plus, the mom of three always looks absolutely fabulous and glowing, so it’s kind of a big deal if she singles out a vegetable and endorses it (similar to how Kim’s makeup recommendations instantly become platinum status). Recently, the eldest Kardashian revealed her obsession with beets, the bright reddish-purple root veggies often mixed into juice cleanses, salads, and, okay, those addictive bags of veggie chips (we won’t tell).
So why are beets KK’s favorite detox trick? Aren’t you supposed to focus only on green leafy vegetables? Kardashian explains on her website that beets are chock-full of detoxifying agents and “neutralize toxins in the liver and help eliminate them from the body.” On top of that, many juice bars include beet roots in their mixtures because the veggie is known to naturally cleanse the blood of heavy metals and other toxins.
The caveat is not to cook beets too long, as the health-giving nutrients will get destroyed in extreme heat. Kardashian recommends leaving the skin on, chopping them and steaming for up to 15 minutes.
Beets are also well known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits which Kardashian says may “reduce the risk of breast, colon, stomach and lung cancer.”
If you’re detoxing because you want to lose weight, there’s another solid reason you’ll want to incorporate beet roots into your diet: They may be able to help you work out better by boosting your performance and stamina. A 2012 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics indicated that beets helped healthy adults run faster. In another study published in 2014 in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, researchers observed trained cyclists and found that beet juice improved time trial performance. Sounds like you need beets before your next SoulCycle ride?
Beets are not only delicious, juicy, and easy to incorporate into your diet, but they also add a pop of color to an otherwise very green salad. Hey, the way things look do matter sometimes. In fact, Kardashian also uses the brightly colored pigments of beets as dyes when she makes play-doh with her kids. See?
