Natural Beauty: Homemade Pomade that Rocks

Pomade, the stuff that keeps fly aways from flying away, wavy locks pieced into instant boho-chic, brings shine to all manner of hairdos and can get your short spikes sticking in just the right direction. But the search for the perfect hair product can be long and arduous – leaving many a drab-haired seeker weary and doubtful – especially a natural, organic one.

Step in: The perfect do-it-yourself recipe for a homemade pomade that strikes a harmonious balance between hold and shine, all the while looking and being oh-so natural.

What You’ll Need:

  • 8 ounce glass mason jar (with metric measuring on the side)
  • double boiler
  • metal stirring object, a fork will do
  • .8 ounces beeswax, cut up into pieces
  • 15 mL filtered jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
  • 20 drops of essential oils; choose your favorites
  • a pomade container of your choosing (I use a 4 ounce mason jar, however something like an altoid container would work)

What To Do:

1. Place the mason jar in the center of your double boiler, adding water until it reaches the midpoint of the jar.

2. Add beeswax to the mason jar.

3. Place saucepan on the stove at high heat and bring the water to a boil.

4. When the beeswax has melted, remove your pan from heat and stir in the jojoba oil until fully emulsified. The amount of beeswax and jojoba oil should be exactly 50 mL.

6. Add arrowroot powder and optional essential oils, stirring until fully combined.

7. Using tongs or an oven mitt, carefully lift the mason jar from the saucepan and pour into your desired pomade container.

8. Let your new pomade cool at room temperature for a couple of hours.

When using your pomade, start with a pea sized amount, warming it between your fingers before working it through your hair.
