Are you experiencing hair-loss? Do you feel you’ve lost volume? Is your hair thinning and greasy? Each of these symptoms may actually be the result of poor scalp care. A scalp treatment may be your solution!
If you are struggling with any or all of these symptoms, you have likely explored any number of treatments or fixes like promising hair sprays, gels, thickening shampoos, conditioners, and the trusty fail-safe that is dry shampoo. But, here’s the deal: most of these products contain waxes, synthetic silicones and silica, not to mention harsh chemicals that can coat your scalp leaving a nasty residue that is hard to remove.
Even trusted shampoos contain ingredients and moisturizing agents that can lead to or aggravate dandruff, itchy scalp and other undesirable conditions. Blockage in your hair follicle created by product buildup prevents new hair growth and renders hair limp, listless and lifeless.
Unfortunately, regular washing is not enough. Most people understandably expect shampoo to remove build-up. But, much like your face, your hair and scalp often need more than just consistent cleansing.
DIY Scalp Treatments and Tips
The good news is that you can prevent and eliminate build-up by implementing an effective scalp treatment regimen using ingredients you probably have lying around in the kitchen! Consider these tips your first steps toward a healthier, fuller more fabulous head of hair.
First, remember these two crucial tips:
Rinse, Rinse, Rinse!
When going through the motions, take care to go through ALL the motions! Once you shampoo and condition, be sure to thoroughly rinse your hair so as to eliminate all product from your hair and scalp.
Massage Your scalp
Don’t save massages for the spa! A two-minute scalp massage can increase circulation and blood-flow, not to mention relax and soothe you.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Helps restore your scalp to its natural pH.
Combine 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of water.
Apply the mixture to your hair after you condition and rinse thoroughly.
For extra hydration, whip one egg and apply the mixture to your hair. Rinse with cold water.
2. Baking Soda
Cleanses and balances pH.
Combine 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of warm water.
Allow to dissolve and apply to scalp & hair after you shampoo.
Rinse with cold water.
3. Sugar Scalp Scrub
This scrub gets rid of excess oil, flaky skin and increases circulation to the hair follicles.
Combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 1 cup of olive oil.
Apply the scrub by sections to your scalp on damp hair and massage for a few minutes.
Rinse then shampoo and condition.
Extra: add your favorite essential oil to any of these mixes to enhance your benefits.
- Peppermint stimulates blood flow.
- Lavender calms and relaxes the senses.
- Vitamin E helps hair growth.
- Tea tree is a strong antiseptic and fights dandruff.
