4 Recycled Headboard Ideas That Look Fancy
Instead of a plain row of pillows lining your bed, add oomph to your bedroom with a headboard. Headboards make a room feel cozy. They add dimension. And, they create a focal point in the room.
A headboard can instantly transform a bedroom because it creates an additional “layer”. It keeps the room from feeling flat. Other ways you can add “layers” include hanging art on the walls, placing a rug on the floor (even over carpet), or adding an extra blanket or quilt to the bed.
You don’t need a fancy-schmancy high-priced headboard to make your bedroom look good. Think outside of the usual. You can make these four headboards out of items that once had altogether different purposes. And, they’ll look far more elaborate than the amount of work it actually takes to make them. Get ready to create a fabulous headboard out of recycled materials.
1. Upholster it
You don’t need to buy an expensive upholstered headboard to make your bedroom look swanky. Create your own version using upcycled materials. All you’ll need is a piece of plywood, some fabric and padding or foam.
Scavenge a leftover piece of plywood from a friend’s remodel, an estate sale or even a construction site (just ask first). For the fabric, repurpose a bed sheet in a pattern you love, or scour secondhand shops for large fabric remnants.
If you or someone you know is handy with the tools, you can cut the plywood in an interesting shape, like romantic curves or more modern cutouts. Or, just leave it in a rectangle. 2. An old ladder
For an eclectic look, hang an old wooden ladder horizontally above your bed. This look will work especially well if your room has a vintage feel. If the slats of wood in the ladder are wide enough, you can even dress it up further by storing books, candles or any other décor you wish in between the planks.
3. Shuttered
Fashion a one-of-a-kind headboard by hanging old window shutters side-by-side above your bed. The slats in the shutters add texture, and look far more exciting than a plain wood headboard that you can purchase anywhere. Paint the shutters in an eye-popping color to stand out against your walls, or leave them in a distressed, shabby state for a vintage look. Hang two, three, four…whatever works for the look you want.
4. Board up
For the ultimate easy headboard, simply compile a bunch of random planks of wood. Then, mount them on the wall above your bed in a design of your choosing. Cut the boards so that they’re all the same size, and when placed flush together make a perfect rectangle. Or, hang them up in uneven lengths. Go vertical. Horizontal. The look is up to you. You could also use old fencing for this project! Paint your newly assembled headboard, or leave the planks in their natural state.
