5 Tips for Decorating on a Budget of $50 (or Less)

Decioaring on a budget.

Let’s face it, if money, resources and health of the planet were no object, we would all love to redecorate (or pay someone else to do it) our homes as much as we had to do so. But for the majority of us reading this, money, resources and the planet are obstacles to us decorating on a budget is a necessity.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing though. I find decorating on a budget is a welcome challenge, because it forces me to be creative in ways I might not be otherwise. Working with a budget also forces us to do our own DIY work, which is also a reward. Nothing is more satisfying than finishing a project and feeling accomplished and proud of your achievements! So long story short, there is virtue in decorating on a budget.

But what if you literally only have a spare $50 on updating a room? How in the world can you change the look of your room with only $50? Here are some tips that will stretch that fifty bucks!

1. Paint – most paint stores offer for reduced prices those mixing mishaps. Someone else’s not-quite-right color just might be your perfect-new-mine color.

2. Flooring and Wallpapering – many shops package up and offer for drastically reduced prices the ends of rolls of flooring and wallpaper. If you have a small room or just want to wallpaper an accent wall, you might be able to find a great deal.

3. Fabric – the same is true for fabric. Shop the fabric store for great deals on fabrics and redo your room with new curtains and accent throw pillows.

4. Repurpose – you might be surprised at the treasure you can repurpose from items destined for the landfill or the recycling bin. I am often amazed at the creative reuses people come up with for wood pallets. I’ve seen them turned into coffee tables, beds, bookshelves and more.

5. DIY – if you are committed to a decorating on a budget, getting your hands dirty is a must. With a little research and a lot of inspiration, you can find relatively easy and inexpensive projects that will transform your room. Pinterest is ever a source of inspiration for me.
