DIY This: Mason Jar Chandelier

Image placeholder title

When I first saw this mason jar chandelier from interior designer Kara Paslay, my jaw dropped. Maybe Kara isn't the first person to put a lightbulb into a jar, but this bundled chandelier is so simple and unique -- yet functional, and actually bright -- that it shocked me nobody had thought of this before.

DIY projects like this are inspiring on many levels. First, they make use of resources you may already have on hand. Bought a jar of pasta sauce lately? Then you have the beginnings of your own chandelier.

Second, DIY challenges are a fun, inspiring way to pick up a few new skills. Personally, I don't have much experience wiring lamps. Thanks to Kara, now I have a reason to learn.

Finally, the cleverness factor here is off the charts. I'll never look at a chandelier -- or a jar -- in the same way, now that I've seen this photo. Like a bottle wall or a corset made from bike tubes, It offers a new way to perceive things we normally take for granted and overlook.

Luckily for you and me, Kara has posted a detailed DIY guide to creating your own chandelier -- and if you want more inspiration, Instructables user katlinbr posted her mason jar chandelier instructions too. It's a perfect undertaking for the short days and dark nights of autumn and winter, so grab all your leftover canning jars and get creative. Let us know how it turns out.

Got more mason jars? Don't stop DIYing! Turn them into an herb garden, decorative elements, bathroom accoutrements, or just fill 'em all with homemade Kahlua.
