People have it so great around the holidays … vacation time, presents, and endless amounts of food. While dogs get two out of the three, this holiday we’re treating our pups to some special food inspired by one of our favorite seasonal veggies … squash. We know it’s tempting to give your dog table scraps but it can be dangerous. Some foods are toxic to dogs and others may cause pancreas and intestinal issues. So next time your pup looks up at you with those please-may-I-have-some eyes, you can whip out these tasty DIY Organic Squash Dog Cookies for a special treat.
DIY Organic Squash Dog Cookies
- 2 1/2 cups organic whole wheat flour
- 2 organic eggs
- 1 small acorn squash for 1/2 cup of mashed squash
- 2 tablespoons organic peanut butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon organic ground cinnamon
From the Organic Authority Files
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Cut the acorn squash in half and scoop out the seeds and guts. Rinse and place on a baking sheet, skin side down. Roast for 45-60 minutes until tender. Remove and let cool completely. Scoop out the flesh and mash with a fork. Set aside 1/2 cup for the recipe. You can use the rest to mix in with your pup’s food or as a treat on its own. Whisk together the flour, eggs, squash, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes. Let cool completely and serve to your pup.
