Organic S’mores: Homemade and Semi-Homemade
Summer’s almost over, but there’s just enough time for a couple more BBQs. While it’s great to switch up your old barbecue standbys for healthier choices, like organic hot dogs and our very own Blue Cheese Cabernet Organic Burgers, what are you doing about dessert? Grilled fruit is a great choice, but it’s hard to forget that childhood barbecue favorite: s’mores. But now that you’ve switched to organic, s’mores are kind of impossible… right? Think again.
Homemade S’Mores
For truly homemade s’mores that you can be completely sure about, there’s only one way to go about it: make both the marshmallows and graham crackers yourself, while trusting some good organic chocolate companies to supply that third ingredient.
For homemade marshmallows, it’s important to pick the right recipe. Some make beautiful marshmallows that don’t melt quite like those Jet-Puffed ones of our youth. These homemade marshmallows from Alton Brown come pretty close; just be careful when roasting, as they melt a bit more quickly than marshmallows you may be used to. (If you’re worried about the corn syrup in the recipe, you can try organic corn syrup, or you can even make your own cane syrup at home.) You can also try our very own homemade marshmallow recipe.
For the homemade graham crackers, you have two options. Either you can dress up the s’mores and make them more gourmet, in which case, there are a myriad of recipes to choose from, from spicy speculoos to decadent chocolate graham crackers. If, however, you’re looking for the classic graham cracker to accompany your childhood s’more, you’re in luck: Smitten Kitchen’s graham crackers are everything you could ever ask for… including whole wheat flour.
Semi-Homemade S’Mores
If you’re not feeling quite so ambitious and you still want to make delicious and healthy s’mores at home, never fear. You can buy the ingredients you need to make them!
Artisan marshmallows can be found in some bakeries and high-end grocery stores, or you can simply order organic marshmallows online.
As for the graham crackers, many companies offer organic versions, including Attune Foods. You’ll find both classic and cinnamon graham crackers for your s’more-making needs. Happy roasting!
