Last month the Hyatt Corporation hotel chain announced a healthy upgrade to its menu offerings in all of its U.S., Canadian and Caribbean hotels. The changes include a children’s menu named “For Kids By Kids” and a commitment to more nutritious food choices, including organic offerings.

In a statement on the Hyatt website, the company said the menu was developed along with the Partnership for a Healthier America and says as part of the menu launch, it will offer “a three-course organic meal for children developed exclusively for the brand by renowned food pioneer and chef, Alice Waters.”

Hyatt worked directly with chef Alice Waters, author and founder of Berkeley, California’s Chez Panisse to adopt some of Waters’ philosophies on fresh, sustainable and local foods to help combat the nation’s obesity epidemic.  “With nearly one in three children diagnosed as overweight or obese in the United States, Hyatt is leading the industry in making children’s health a priority and has worked to make the healthy choice the easy choice for guests.”

The “For Kids By Kids” menu was taste-tested and approved by children including Haile Thomas, an 11-year old chef behind the healthy eating online cooking show called Kids Can Cook and the menu items will offer fruits and vegetables as the “default side item” and “meet the most recent U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, MyPlate and PHA’s standards and ensure food illustrations depict healthier options,” according to the company. Hyatt worked with Haile to create the menu offerings that provide a high nutritional value and are interactive and fun, like creating their own pasta dish and “shaking” up salads.
