French women are known for their chic style, effortless beauty and youthful, glowing complexions. The key to flawless skin, in particular, is a subject of much curiosity and discussion. Do the French know something the rest of us don’t? Is there something in the water? While visiting Paris recently, I decided to do a little investigating of my own.
First, I learned that French women allow their skin to rest. Which is to say, they give their skin plenty of time sans-cosmetics, naked and free. Although your skin’s natural oils are there to help, they can build up in an unhealthy way when the skin is not regularly allowed a respite from layers of makeup and product.
For more advice, I stopped in to a shop called Oh My Cream! Clean, beauty-conscious, and all natural? They’ve got my vote! I longed to discover a precious pearl of skincare wisdom and was not disappointed. Oh My Cream! founder Juliette Levy swears by ‘three easy steps’ to radiantly healthy skin.
Step One: Double Cleanse
Start by using make-up removing oils. Wash off the oil, then follow your second cleanse with a regular gel or milk cleanser. This ensures that all makeup and impurities are completely removed, allowing your products to penetrate and absorb more effectively.
This cleansing oil melts into the skin to remove pollutants and cosmetic residue. Smoothes wrinkles and firms. Vegan and 100% clean.
Rockstar ingredients like activated charcoal and Rassoul clay deliver a deep-cleanse, especially for acne-prone or oily skin types. 100% Natural, GMO-free, Vegan. Made in the US with French savoir-faire courtesy of founder Valerie Grandury.
Step Two: Soft, Gentle Exfoliation
Trade harsh grains and granules for 100% natural enyzmes or a "chemical" exfoliant made up of non-toxic fruit acids. Why exfoliate at all? Exfoliating eliminates dull, dead skin cells and promotes a healthy glow while targeting and lightening hyperpigmentation and acne spots.
This mask performs three functions: Detox, peel, brighten & firm. Enzymes and fruit acids naturally exfoliate while Vitamin C and probiotics even out skin tone. Cruelty-Free, Vegan, Organic. Made in the USA.
Step Three: Treatment Oil
Use a natural vegetable oil to help form a barrier against everyday aggressors like pollution. Although moisturizing creams were long considered the best protectors, oils have a greater affinity with the skin, penetrate easily and give just the right amount of hydration.
Plant oils and Vitamin E combine to soften and nourish. Can be used on skin, hair and body!
Inspired by French skincare, this organic botanical elixir illuminates dull skin. Ingredients like Jojoba, Argan, and Rosehip oil sooth irritation and inflammation.
One Last Tip
Popular French facialist Joelle Ciocco, who has treated the faces of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and French fashion icon Carine Roitfeld, agrees that double-cleansing is a crucial beauty step. However, she warns against makeup wipes which, while easy to use, are far from easy on your skin.
A viable alternative? Use Micellar Gel Cleanser instead.
Micellar water is a French beauty staple. But, don’t let the word ‘water’ fool you into thinking you can extract it from your faucet. This cleanser goes on like a lotion and strengthens the skin. It’s gentle but so effective you can use it for makeup removal even around the eye area.
Now that you’re double-cleansed, exfoliated and oil-treated, the only thing that remains is a finishing touch. We leave you with two essential products you’re bound to love.
This 100% natural mineral sunscreen is an everyday necessity. Cruelty-free, vegan and hypoallergenic. Great for adults and kids alike.
Perfect for all skin types, this refreshing spray-on is great for soothing irritation or fatigue. Mineral-rich and deeply hydrating, it acts as a toner, too!
