New GMO Soybean Approved by the USDA

Claiming that the Vistive Gold genetically modified soybeans will significantly extend the fry life of products made with Monsanto’s newest crop, the largest seed manufacturer in the world has received another deregulation by the USDA and no objection from the FDA on the GMO seed.

MON 87705 is now cleared for field testing and seed production throughout the United States with the approval from the USDA.

Vistive Gold is the second low-linolenic soybean on the market, with previously deregulated products used by major brands including KFC and Kellogg’s, according to FoodNavigator.com. But the newest low-fat genetically modified soy will extend the shelf life of products even further, claims Monsanto. The company’s global technology lead for food quality traits, Joe Cornelius, told FoodNavigator.com that “[F]armers will soon be able to deliver an economical and sustainable source of nutritionally improved soybean oil to consumers and food companies.”

Plans include combining the Vistive Gold soybean with Monsanto’s Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans, intended to increase farmer yields.

According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, at least 70 percent of processed foods sold in U.S. supermarkets now contain genetically modified ingredients and 93 percent of soy grown on U.S. soil is genetically modified, with soybean oil found in a number of processed/fast foods.

In addition to the serious health risks associated with consuming genetically modified foods, soy poses another risk: hexane. Used in processing soy ingredients to make isolates and concentrates, whole soybeans are bathed in synthetic petroleum-based solvents including the neurotoxin and pollutant, hexane.
