Kylie Jenner is Attempting to Go Vegan: Here’s Why it’s So Important
Kylie Jenner, youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner family and Lip Kit creator, says she’s “trying this whole vegan thing,” according to her Snapchat caption overlaying a photo of vegan tacos, salsa, and what appears to be a peach smoothie. A second photo displays raw, dairy-, grain-, and soy-free nachos.
Sure, Jenner isnt exactly considered the ideal role model. (Remember when she and her sister Kendall superimposed their photos over legendary music artists on t-shirts for profit? Ugh.) But PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) makes a good point. In a blog post titled “Kylie Jenner Is Trying Vegan—and We’re All About It,” PETA underscores the reality TV star’s over 22 million followers on Twitter, where she “set the record straight about her dairy-free life.” Last year, MTV deemed her the “Confirmed Queen of Snapchat.” The point is: Jenner has millions of fans, many of whom are impressionable teenage girls who may be inspired to explore the vegan life simply because their beloved Kylie chose to do so.
This dietary decision may come as a bit of shock as half-sister Khloé Kardashian revealed on her namesake blog last year that Jenner eats “like a typical teenager,” a claim substantiated by all the junk food and instant ramen on her social media accounts. In the same year, Jenner told HarpersBazaar.com she loves eating hash browns, bacon, or banana pancakes for breakfast and burgers, spaghetti, and all types of potatoes for dinner. And just at the beginning of this year, she shared her go-to breakfast recipe for her then-paramour, Tyga: pre-cooked white rice with eggs with a side of turkey sausage patties.
It’s unclear why Jenner was roused to make the shift, but as long as her diehard fans want to be as much like her as possible, we hope to see more of her vegan culinary creations on her social media. In 2015, cosmetic clinics reported considerable increases in requests for lip fillers (some as high as 70%) after Jenner announced the procedure was responsible for her pillowy pout. If this is any indication of her influence, the hope is her vegan aspirations could mean more animal lives saved, a decreased impact on the environment from animal farming, and at the very least, more awareness.
Although a former burger addict might very well fall off the wagon, Jenner at least has one resource she can rely on to help: PETA.
“Whatever her inspiration, PETA wants Kylie and all of her followers to know that going vegan is the best decision you can make and that we’re always here to help,” the group wrote. And for the record, we are, too!
