5 Surprising Things that Can Decrease Libido and Disrupt Your Sex Life

Between the Sheets: 5 Surprising Things That Can Mess Up Your Sex Life

Sex drive can be a delicate matter, especially as you age. But at the same time, keeping that spark alive in the bedroom is important to the health of your relationship. Your sex life is just one part of relationship maintenance. And some crazy things may take their toll on your sex life and decrease libido in ways that might surprise you.

1. Cash register receipts

Cash register receipts are coated in bisphenol A (BPA), a hormone disrupting chemical which has been shown to decrease libido, particularly in men. And sex is a two way street, if your man doesn’t want to, it can make you feel inadequate. Make it a policy to just say no to receipts and check your balance online.

2. Pregnancy

While some women experience an increased sex drive while pregnant, other women experience the opposite. Plus lots of men are scared they will hurt their unborn child. Couple this with body image issues and you have a recipe for a massively reduced sex drive. Don’t fret if you fall into this category. Understand that your hormones are beyond your control during pregnancy and your sex life may just not be front and center.

3. Alcohol

While a glass of wine may get your juices flowing, excessive drinking or binge drinking can take a toll on sex drive. It’s about keeping your body healthy and too much alcohol breaks your body down, diminishing your sex life from years past.

4. Soda

Many sodas contain brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a somewhat toxic ingredient that has been linked to male infertility and decreased libido. Soda also contains tons of sugar which has also proven problematic for male libido. One study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men with better blood sugar levels enjoyed better sex than men with higher blood sugar.

5. Sleep Deprivation

It’s not just that you’re too tired to have sex. Sleep deprivation also impacts your hormones, which in turn, impacts sex drive.

It all comes down to keeping your body healthy as you age. Enjoy a healthy diet that’s low in sugar and free of processed foods and avoid too much booze. Get enough sleep and try and avoid endocrine disruptors like BPA, which may kill the mood without you even realizing it. Oh yeah, and don’t eat Corn Flakes. How about this for a fun sex drive fact: John Harvey Kellogg, who invented this morning favorite was a big believer in abstinence so he spent a portion of his career inventing foods that he thought would kill your sex drive. So, well, keep your consumption of Corn Flakes to a minimum. They have too much added sugars anyway (giggle, giggle).

What surprising things impact your sex life for better or worse? And what have you done to naturally improve your sex drive?
