As the star of Showtime's hit drama "Shameless," it's pretty fitting that actress Emmy Rossum has no shame when it comes to revealing her favorite beauty secrets.
In a recent interview with Byrdie, Rossum, who's also the new ambassador for Burt's Bee's Beauty, and I Am Not Synthetic campaign, spilled the goods on how she keeps her look so fresh and oh-so-fabulous, while staying 'au naturel'.
Curious how Rossum remains such a natural beauty? Thankfully, the former ballerina's approach to her beauty routine is as down-to-earth as the Golden Globe nominee herself.
She Sees Her Skin as Her 'Hard Drive'
"I think of your skincare as a computer hard drive and your makeup is all the apps that you play with, but if your hard drive isn't running very well, you can't really play with any of the apps, so I think skincare is half of makeup," she told the publication, adding that she gets a facial every six to eight weeks.
Regular facials are known to improve your skin's tone, texture, and elasticity by counteracting the damaging effects of air pollution and sun exposure. Facials also involve some massage, which aids in blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce puffiness, improve skin cell renewal, and can slow the onset of wrinkles.
She Keeps Her Beauty Products Natural
Rossum definitely has a point when she told Byrdie, "I think we're so concerned about what we're putting in our bodies that we don’t also think about what we're putting on our bodies, and because the skin is the largest organ in the body, I think it's important that we try to make as much of our skincare and beauty routine as natural as possible."
What you put on your skin could be equally, if not even more, harmful as ingesting chemicals through your food or environment. In fact, the most popular beauty and skincare products often contain phthalates, lead, aluminum, sodium lauryl sulfate, BHA, boric acid, and parabens. These toxins have been attributed to an increase of eczema, psoriasis, skin rashes and adult acne, among other illnesses.
Bottom line? It's worth to take a page from Rossum's book, and look into making the switch to organic and natural beauty products.

She Fuels Her Workouts With Natural Foods
Like her beauty products, the actress keeps her diet as natural as possible.
"I like an approach to eating that is healthy and nutritious and balanced and eating whole foods, trying to limit the kind of things that you eat that are in packages," she said. "It's the same idea that what you put on your skin should be from natural ingredients—what you put in your body will fuel you best if it's from natural ingredients."
When you consume food in their most natural condition, your body receives enzymes and nutrients in their most unrefined state. From boosting your energy levels to giving you a nice, natural, healthy glow, there are many benefits to eating a diet that consists of whole unprocessed foods.
She's Not Into Filters
Scrolling through picture-perfect Instagram photos, and inevitably playing the compare game, is something we all struggle with. Which is why, at the end of the day, Rossum is more focused on looking real and less filtered.
"I feel like we're so saturated with images that are retouched or Snapchatted or Facetuned that it's really hard to tell what's real and what's not anymore," she said. "So I'm really in my life I'm hungering for something that is real and natural that feels attainable."
If your 'gram feed is making you feel a little less than, you might want to try a digital detox this holiday season. A digital detox is known to reduce stress, instill more peace and confidence, and helps you to connect to the real things in your life -- including the real you.
"[My self-image is] much better. It's still a struggle. I think that the pressures of social media and advertising affect our fluctuating relationship with our own self-image," she told Byrdie. "And I think for me, focusing on the other things that I have to offer the world in addition to just my hair or my face really grounds me."
By focusing on keeping her makeup as natural as possible, while also focusing on what's really important, Rossum's approach to beauty is as real and relatable as the actress herself.
