There’s no doubt that Jennifer Lopez is as gorgeous as ever at 49. As evidenced by recent Instagram posts that display her enviable abs and flawless skin, the actress seems to have stumbled upon the fountain of youth or some fancy elixir that only A-list celebrities are privy to.

But, according to a recent interview with People magazine, the “Second Act” star’s secrets to staying fit and looking beautiful are actually much more relatable.

“I sum it all up as trying to live a healthy lifestyle,” Lopez told People. 

She Gets Some Solid Sleep

The star revealed that she gets at least 7 to 9 hours a night, or “10 or 11 hours on a day off.” If you’re thinking that’s too many hours of shuteye, consider this: when we sleep, our body recharges, which includes our skin. Missing out on sleep increases our stress levels, which affects our collagen production. Collagen helps with the elasticity and structure of our skin; if we’re not getting enough, our skin will look more thin and less firm.  

Additionally, lack of sleep drives up our cortisol levels, which triggers inflammation and can result in a haggard appearance. No wonder it’s called beauty sleep! 

She Drinks a Lot of Water

Lopez told People she drinks a lot of water, which is a great way of releasing toxins from your body and your skin. While there’s been some debate as to whether water consumption actually helps with improving skin tone and texture, it makes sense. After all, our skin is comprised of 64 percent water. And, let’s face it, after drinking eight glasses of water per day, your skin tends to look plumper and more glow-y like Lopez’s. 

Besides, even if water doesn’t actually make you look ageless, we need it for a slew of bodily functions, so the more we drink of it, the better. 

She Mixes Up Her Workout Routine

When it comes to maintaining her fit physique, the singer-dancer shared that she likes to mix it up by incorporating dancing, yoga, weight lifting, and circuit training into her workout routine. 

Lopez is definitely onto something. By changing up your workouts, your risk for hitting that dreaded plateau lessens. Adding variety to your routine will keep your exercises from becoming ineffective. If you keep logging hours onto a treadmill at the same tempo, chances are your body won’t change after a while. When you keep your body guessing, you’ll find that you lose more weight and tone up faster. 

She Eats Healthy But Treats Herself

“I’m not a perfect eater,” Lopez said, “but if I feel like I’ve been naughty for a few days or if I’m trying to slim down a couple of pounds, I’ll do a protein shake in the morning and one at night.”

Cheat meals are important to a well-balanced diet because they allow you to satisfy cravings, while also giving you the opportunity to live a little. In fact, recent research has found that giving yourself an incentive or reward, like a slice of your favorite cake, can be an effective strategy for weight loss goals. 

As for those protein shakes, Lopez prefers “a thick healthy shake made from sunflower butter, chocolate protein powder and banana,” which is chockfull of protein, vitamin E, healthy fats, and potassium, which will give her that boost of energy and feeling of fullness so she can tackle another day of being J. Lo.

We might not have the rocks that Lopez has, but her wellness secrets reveal that she’s still Jenny from the block. By sticking to a solid sleep schedule, drinking lots of water, mixing up our workout routine, and eating a well-balanced diet, we might achieve that J.Lo glow yet.
