Kelly Ripa Swears By an Alkaline Diet for Her Ripped 47-Year-Old Body
At 47 years old, talk show host Kelly Ripa has some ‘ripped’ abs, which she wasn’t afraid to show off for hubby Mark Consuelos recently on Instagram. Though the star’s photo caused a kerfuffle for some who deemed her “too old” for a bikini shot, it did get everyone wondering, “How does she have that body?”
According to People Magazine, the “Live with Kelly & Ryan” co-host leads an active and healthy lifestyle, relying on regular workouts and adhering to an alkaline diet.
“It has changed my life, it’s changed the whole way I think about food,” Ripa said on her show in 2015.
From all accounts, the mom of three’s lifestyle is definitely working for her. Feeling inspired by Ripa’s ‘gram? Here’s what you need to know about the star’s regime.
She Eats an Alkaline Diet
Ripa swears by a seven-day alkaline diet cleanse to help get her body in tip-top shape. The alkaline diet is based on the idea that the foods you eat can affect the acidity or alkalinity (the pH value) of your body.
“It’s a very manageable cleanse. It’s very manageable,” Ripa told People. “You’re not hungry. It’s not like … people go, ‘What are you eating? You’re just drinking, you know, a green juice a day?’ No, it’s not like that. You eat. I actually eat much more on this cleanse than I do in my actual life, but it’s what you eat and how you eat it.”
According to the acid-ash theory, acidic foods make you more vulnerable to inflammation, illness, and disease, while alkaline ash is considered “protective” and improves your health.
Essentially the diet centers heavily around fruits and vegetables, rather than meat, grains, and processed foods.
Top alkaline foods include garlic, beets, avocado, almonds, tomatoes, and pumpkin seeds, while acidic foods to avoid include potatoes, butter, beef, pork, and white pasta and bread.
Though Ripa does a seven-day cleanse to jump-start her bod, she says that her regular diet doesn’t stray too far from an alkaline one anyway.
“My normal life…is not that different than the alkaline cleanse,” she said.
She Dances to Stay in Shape
In addition to regular SoulCycle classes, Ripa enjoys the Anna Kaiser Technique (AKT), which “combines circuit training, HIIT, strength, toning, dance cardio, Pilates, and yoga.”
“I love the dance class,” Ripa told People of AKT. “Because I think I’ve aged out of going clubbing, really, that’s my nightclub. Everybody there is my age, so it’s like a bunch of us old ladies working out.”
Dancing is a fantastic way of getting your sweat on. Not only does it utilize different muscle groups and improve coordination and rhythm, but it also blasts fat while toning muscles. Factor in the strengthening benefits of Pilates and yoga, as well as the intensity of HIIT, and no wonder Ripa is in such amazing shape.
She Treats Herself
Ripa might be a rigorous fan of the alkaline diet, but she also knows when to relax a bit and treat herself to her favorite indulgences.
“I like to drink coffee. I occasionally will have fish. The alkaline diet is primarily a vegan diet, but I like cream in my coffee,” she told People. “I like to have a glass of wine. So I don’t adhere to it strictly, but when I do a cleanse, it will be seven days, and then I go back to my normal life.”
Treating yourself to dessert or a glass of wine is not only delicious, but it’s actually important especially when it comes to weight loss. Treating yourself to a favorite snack during a diet helps you lose weight because it helps prevent you from bingeing, while also helping you to stay motivated and on track towards your fitness goals.
The Takeaway
Ripa’s lifestyle is super healthy, but it’s also manageable. Sticking to nutritious foods and a regular workout routine, with the occasional treat, sounds like the perfect example of a balanced life.
Forget the haters. If you can rock a bikini like Ripa at 47, then we say, go for it.
