Make Your Own Aromatherapy Mood Mists

Aromatherapy. The art of using scent to the benefit of our wellbeing… or shall we call it a science? Our sense of smell has the remarkable ability to quickly connect to the brain and affect a change in mood or attitude (we don’t have to tell you that when you smell someone who wears the same cologne as your ex!).

Aromatherapy utilizes essential oils, or the potent volatile oils present in plants and flowers also known as plant hormones. Based on the chemistry of these hormones they work with our brain chemistry to initiate a physiological change. Different essential oils work in different ways, and luckily we have a pretty good understanding of what produces what effect.

When my friends start referring to me as “sunshine” with an ever-so-slight tinge of sarcasm, I know: It’s time to dig into my purse, mist my face and take a couple of deep breaths. That is, if I want to continue to have any friends. Use the following recipes for a mood mist that appeals to your disposition. Believe in the power of scent, and she will deliver.

A Quick Pick-Me-Up… Thank God

1 drop eucalyptus essential oil

2 drops geranium essential oil

3 drops peppermint essential oil

Take it Down a Notch

2 drops bergamot essential oil

1 drop frankincense essential oil

3 drops lavender essential oil

To Make the Sprays

1. Fill a clean, dry mini (and perhaps recycled) spray bottle with 4 ounces of pure distilled water.

2. Using a dropper, carefully put the selected blend of essential oils directly into the spray bottle.

3. Tightly close the bottle and shake vigorously to combine.

Be sure to shake it before each use, as the water and essential oils tend to separate.
