At 48, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is undoubtedly a timeless beauty, thanks to her classic style of long, wavy raven locks and a killer smokey eye. However, in part to her 2011 bipolar diagnosis, Zeta-Jones is just as focused on keeping herself healthy and balanced from the inside, out, as she is with her makeup and skin routine.
She recently detailed her wellness routine to W Magazine, which includes everything from her workouts to her preferred diet, all of which helps keep her balanced, beautiful, and healthy, both physically and mentally. Here's a rundown of what we learned.
She Eats an Anti-Inflammatory Diet
According to the interview, Zeta-Jones's diet consists of, "Water, maintaining my pH balance, no alcohol and through diet keeping my body free of any inflammation inside and out."
Inflammation is often at the root of many medical conditions, including heart disease, Alzheimer's, allergies, and cancer, as well as mental disorders such as depression and bipolar.
Though it's not a cure-all, an anti-inflammatory diet, which is comprised of healthy, wholesome, unprocessed foods, is recommended to help us feel good and live with little to no pain.
Fruits and veggies with high levels of antioxidants are important, especially onions, garlic, peppers and dark leafy greens, as well as herbs and spices like turmeric, oregano, rosemary, and ginger, that help combat inflammation.
Maintaining a healthy pH balance like Zeta-Jones means keeping the internal conditions of your body at just about 7.0 on the pH scale. It's believed that our metabolism, as well as our respiratory, digestive, and immune systems function at their best at this level.
From the Organic Authority Files
Adhering to an alkaline diet, which, like an anti-inflammatory diet promotes eating whole, raw, organic fruits and vegetables, as well as fitting in regular fitness and meditation are some of the ways to help your body maintain its optimal blood pH level.
She Drinks Kombucha
When asked her drink of choice, the Oscar winner told the magazine, "Cold press juice and Kombucha." Considering her diet, it's no wonder that Zeta-Jones is a fan of kombucha.
The fermented tea has many healthy benefits. Not only is it a rich source of glucosamine, which has been found to help reduce inflammation, but it's also filled with antioxidants and probiotics, essentials for a healthy gut. And a healthy gut has many benefits such as an effective immune system, improved digestion, mental clarity, and mood stability.
As for the Zeta-Jones's other beverage of choice? Since cold pressed juices are exposed to minimal heat and air, they’re said to be able to hold onto more vitamins, minerals, and enzymes present in the fruits and vegetables. Though there isn't any scientific evidence supporting this claim, consuming cold pressed juice is a good way to get more fruits and veggies into your diet in a fast and easy way.
She Exercises Regularly
Zeta-Jones told W that she keeps active with a variety of sports and hobbies, including swimming, tennis, tap dancing, working out at her home gym, and peloton, which is to cycle within an integrated unit similar to those in Tour de France.
Not only does her busy fitness schedule keep her body in top shape, but a regular exercise routine is key for Zeta-Jones's mental health, too. Due to the endorphins it releases, there's no wonder why exercise makes us feel so amazing after a sweat session. Consistent exercise is known to help reduce stress and symptoms of mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.
Ultimately, by focusing on her overall well-being and working from the inside, out, including maintaining a healthy diet and consistent exercise, Zeta-Jones is a good (looking) example of what it means to balance both your physical and mental health.
