How to Choose the Perfect Watermelon
The key to any good dish is good ingredients. To pick out the best watermelon at your local store or farmer’s market you can look for a few things. As far as color, you actually want a dull color versus shiny, as shiny watermelons are not quite ripe. Additionally, you want nice bold stripes. The field spot indicates the area with a circular discoloration. You’ll want to pick a melon that has a creamy, yellow spot versus one with a white spot as this color has a direct correlation with ripeness. Watermelon also falls somewhere in the middle on pesticides rankings, so if it’s available it’s best to opt for organic.
We can’t get enough of watermelon this summer. Well, any summer, as evidenced by our not-insignificant library of unique watermelon recipes. Try our beloved chocolate-dipped watermelon pops—yes, really—or our vodka-infused watermelon.
Watermelon Arugula and Feta Salad
It’s the surprisingly satisfying blend of bursting, juicy watermelon and tangy, fresh feta cheese that makes this salad work so well. Arugula and mint provide some necessary contrasting bite, and lime elevates the entire flavor profile of the dish. You’ll be hooked.
